Garden of Dave and Susan Saunders
Long Pond, CBS, Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is not well known for its beautiful gardens as our weather is not condusive to "lushness" - but try telling that to a Newfoundland Gardener!

We have been lucky in our Long Pond garden to be able to grow hundreds of plants and vegetables and over the years have reasoned that what won't winter-over can still be grown, but as an annual. There is something to be said for the relaxation of resting beside the fishpond and listening to the water gently running over the waterfalls.

Such bliss after a stressful day at work. We have numerous garden visits each summer sharing our garden with others and love to help other people find the joy of gardening. After all, gardening is about sharing. We enjoy all forms of gardening and have a large lot which is packed with trees, shrubs, plants and, of course, the fish pond. Even though our pond freezes over completely in winter the fish live there all year round and emerge each spring quite happy.

Our garden now holds a special memory for us as it was the only one in Canada to win the main prize of the Schultz gardening contest for 2001. And we spent a "gardening trip of a lifetime" in London England in May 2002 and the Chelsea Flower show courtesy of Schultz because of it. So yes, you CAN garden in Newfoundland and Labrador.
