Garden of Joy and Ian Senciall
St. Johns, Newfoundland

Our suburban garden in the east end of St.John's is not limited by the vagaries of climate. Each year seems to bring a new challenge. Our springs can be late and cool, but we appreciate the intense colours of the spring flowers all the more and for a longer time.

Our summers are relatively short and cool, but often flowers persist into November. We can grow a wide range of plants hardy to zone 5 and often zone 6. Undercover protection with a cold frame, greenhouse and sun room extend the seasons and the range of plants that can be grown. Our garden features include a pond, vegetable garden, herbaceous border, shade garden, rock garden, patio and sun room.

Many of the ornamental conifers and shrubs have been grown from cuttings; annual plants grown from seed supplement the perennials each year. Winters are eased by continuing to grow winter flowering plants indoors under lights...and of course dreaming of things to come.
